On the Morphological Distinctiveness of Callithrix

چکیده
The dwarf marmoset, described as Callithrix humilis by van Roosmalen et al. (1998), is an anomaly among Amazonian marmosets for its size, morphology and behavior. We compare cranial and mandibular characters of the dwarf marmoset with representatives of four other callitrichid genera. C. humilis displays qualitative differences in skull morphology when compared to other callitrichids, and a discriminant analysis of quantitative characters suggests that the dwarf marmoset is strongly distinct from all other Amazonian genera, including Callithrix. These differences are most pronounced in the morphology of the lower jaw and may refl ect specialized feeding adaptations, although little is known of the dwarf marmoset’s behavior in the wild.

A sequential approach using genetic and morphological analyses to test species status: the case of United States federally endangered Agalinis acuta (Orobanchaceae).
PREMISE OF THE STUDY Given that inaccurate taxonomy can have negative consequences for species of conservation concern and result in erroneous conclusions regarding macroecological patterns, efficient methods for resolving taxonomic uncertainty are essential. The primary objective of this study was to assess the evolutionary distinctiveness of the federally endangered plant species Agalinis acu...
متن کاملMorphological Changes in the Suprachiasmatic Nucleus of Aging Female Marmosets (Callithrix jacchus)
The suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN) are pointed to as the mammals central circadian pacemaker. Aged animals show internal time disruption possibly caused by morphological and neurochemical changes in SCN components. Some studies reported changes of neuronal cells and neuroglia in the SCN of rats and nonhuman primates during aging. The effects of senescence on morphological aspects in SCN are impor...
متن کاملThe ductus venosus and intrahepatic venous system in Callithrix jacchus jacchus and Macaca fascicularis fetuses.
BACKGROUND The ductus venosus (DV) and the intrahepatic branches of the portal vein are arranged as parallel vessels. Blood shunting through the DV ensures fetal survival during periods of stress. The availability of a suitable animal model with similar structure and function to the human fetus would greatly improve the understanding of DV function. The anatomical and histological structure of ...
متن کاملConservation prioritization in widespread species: the use of genetic and morphological data to assess population distinctiveness in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from British Columbia, Canada
Prioritization of efforts to maintain biodiversity is an important component of conservation, but is more often applied to ecosystems or species than within species. We assessed distinctiveness among 27 populations of rainbow trout (Salmonidae: Oncorhynchus mykiss) from British Columbia, Canada, using microsatellite DNA variation (representing historical or contemporary demography) and morpholo...
متن کاملThe role of androgenic steroids in shaping social phenotypes across the lifespan in male marmosets (Callithrix spp.).
Steroid hormones, particularly androgens and their metabolic derivatives, play a prominent role in shaping morphological, behavioral, and social phenotypes in many organisms, including primates. This paper reviews the endocrine correlates of development in male marmoset monkeys of the genus Callithrix (C. kuhlii and C. geoffroyi). A lifespan developmental perspective is adopted, in which our kn...
